Not xconfig;
make xconfig
You need to install the kernel and gcc and make (at a minimum).
Basically, you need a "devleopment" system.
But frankly, you need to think long & hard about how important this is
to you; if you've never done any development/make/compile/kernel
rebuilds before, well, it's a good way to do "real" Linux but it's a
little involved and it's perfectly possible to do it wrong in such a
way that your system is quite unusable. (Granted, I do it within hours
installing, but I'm a bit of an old-timer. [Not as old as some--I
wasn't around in the 0.x days.])
A word to the wise.
