First, there's no need to modify mtab; that's the current state of the
system. You only need to modify fstab.
By the same token, the empty mtab is just empty 'cause the mount fails,
but you already knew that; the mtab~ is from when you edited the mtab.
The problem here is that your /boot/System.map must be out of sync with
the boot image, but since you didn't recompile the kernel or otherwise
change it (if I follow you correctly) I don't see why this is.
I'd probably re-rerun lilo as a first pass, and if that doesn't work
build and install a new kernel.
(I'm not sure what the recommended approach here is, frankly; I just
let it build it where "make bzlilo" likes to put it and modify
lilo.conf to match, ditching the /boot dir, but that's obviously not
the appoach you want to take.
