I have installed XFree4 couple of times on my desktop and laptop, it
took a little work but it worked nicely after that.

I got the rpms. I uninstalled all the XFree3.3.6 before installing 4.0.
then I rpmed all the XFree4.

I had to do couple of things though:
        1. delete the link /usr/X11R6/bin/X and made a new link like
        this
                ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 /usr/X11R6/bin/X
        2. chmod +s /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86
        3. chmod a+wr /var/log/XFree86.0.log

then as root I did run
        XFree86 -configure

that created a an XF86Config.new in the root directory after it probed
the hardware. I copied that file to /etc/X11/XF86Config.

I had to tweak few things like the fonts (which I copied from the old
XF86Config..

everything worked just fine after that, in fact I am running it at the
moment.

So far I could not tell any major difference except for the nicer
XF86Config. and I cannot tell much of performance improvement.

good luck
