I've discovered something interesting here while trying to
install from a CD I burned myself. My new machine has a 52x
cdrom, and I"m using a cd burned on an Imation blank.
Here's the problem -- the printing isn't symmetrical, thus
the CD is unbalanced at high speed and Linux can't install
off it. A different brand of CD that has just a plain white
surface spun up just fine, and would have installed just
fine if the removeable hard drive tray had been in all the
way. :-)
Something to keep in mind next time you've got a
problem installing on a high-speed CDROM. If the CD has a
lot of ink on one side and almost none on the other, it's
going to have problems. I think that's one reason some CDs
burn or install better than others. The ones with equal
ink/paint on the top of the CD work better than the ones
with asymmetrical printing.
