I believe the default settings for Samba include authenticating against
the operating system's users.  Check the smb.conf man page for a more
complete explanation, but the section "NOTE ABOUT USERNAME/PASSWORD
VALIDATION" basically boils down to saying that all username/password
authentication is performed against the operating system.

If you're having problems, you might check to see that your clients are
passing info in the correct case.
