A firewall was an "internet appliance" before that term became
popular.  It's a dedicated computer that only filters TCP/IP
packets so that "black hat" hackers can't get to your computer(s)
and do nasty things to you.

Firewall *software* runs on Linux and does effectively the 
same thing on your own PC.

Go to http://www.linux-howto.com and look for the firewall howto.

I use PMfirewall (find it at www.freshmeat.net) to configure
my firewall.
