I thought that this problem had been solved long ago.

The original poster (you?) discovered that the end of hir rc.local had
something that switched the runlevel to 5.

Just delete those lines.

(Runlevel 5 is xdm/kdm; runlevel 3 is normal multi-user text mode.)
