I (deliberately) didn't set up a /boot partition. I boot to Win98 by
default, which brings up a menu in config.sys to boot the linux kernel
via loadlin.exe. I will set up a /boot part when next I can reformat and
reinstall Win98. I might have to postpone linux troubleshooting until
then, and solve it all at once.

I'm currently still using the kernel from my 6.1 distro, but I can't
transfer the new kernel to the FAT32 part until I can mount it! (Once
again, I can't mount even if booting from MDK7 boot disk.)

I'm grateful for all your responses
