A differential is a highly evolved mechanical device. It allows the wheel on
the inside of the turn rotate slower than the wheel on the outside of the turn.
it is a simple device of only 4 moving parts which in turn makes it terribly
reliable.

OR

A differential is an adaptation of an interigal in calculus. It lets us find
the aera under a curve. How else are you going to find out how much water is
in that tipped glass?

OR

A differential is the absolute sum of the change in attittude of a programmer's
wife when it is explaned that I will be working on a new application that will
revolutionize the world as we know it. It only works in a negatively, yet
exponential fasion that resembles a downward spiral. We need this because,as
everyone knows, as the result of this equation approaches infinity, so do the
lawyer bills. Why do I have to pay HER lawyer?

Like you said, totally off topic.
