The US is a *big* country, with a relatively de-centralized structure
for both government and communications (especially for communications
since the AT&T breakup).
So . . . some areas are way ahead; others are behind.
I am currently at my max available speed, which is 28.8 kB. (The phone
lines are too poor for anything faster: even a 56k modem runs *slower*
than the 28.8, and no ISDN / DSL / whatever is available.)
On the other hand, local service is unmetered, and we have two
phone lines, so I could download 24/7 if I really wanted, and I do all
my significant downloading overnight already.
However I'm promised that in less than a month I'll have cable modem
and be fairly flying becuase we have fiber-optic cable practically right
up to the house.
Sorta strange, but that's America for you.

| Wait a minute, are you all located in the area which our tech
| people tell us is way ahead of us in communications?
| I'm living in Germany and I guess there is no part of this
| old-fashioned state where you cannot hook up to several ISPs
| with a 64K ISDN line (or 128 with MPPP or even more with 2
| cards, etc.)
| I get really green-faced reading about all those guys w/
| cable-modems or satellite links. We don't have that over here
| (just for big companies at enormous costs). But we have a
| widespread net of ISPs w/ ISDN links. That's not so far behind,
| methinks.
