Did as you suggested - works fine. Thanks also to the person who sent me
the '.4' file - I'm keeping just in case I do have problems with the
symbolic link.

Also in looking at the /usr/lib directory I noticed that
/usr/lib/libguile.so.5 is also a symbolic link to ...... yep
/usr/lib/libguile.so.6. Which is itself a symbolic link to yet another
file. So now gnucash is 'using' .4 which is symbollically linked to '.5'
which is symbolically linked to '.6' which is symbolically linked to
another file which is I think the end of the chain. Maybe someday I'll
change the '.4' link the end of the chain - probably won't change
anything, but will assuage my aesthetic sensability.

Also, is there any documentation anywhere that the '.x' notation is
actually just newer versions. I couldn't figure out why gnucash was
insistent upon the '.4' library. I just figured that the '.1', '.5' and
'.6' files listed under ls were different portions of the guile library
and provided totally different functionality.

Anyway, gnucash is now running. Looks good although a new mind set from
the old software I have been running for 10 years. I am beginning to
compare the change to the difference between C and C++.

Ahhh - a chance to learn something new - I actually enjoy the
experience, but then I'm also one of the few people who read the manual
before turning on the power switch.

Have you noticed how many electronic device manuals are still in
fractured English translated from fratured Japanese???
