Yes, works fine, no reason it shouldn't.....
You should "mv /lib/modules /lib/modules.bak"
if you are recompiling your current kernel tho...
don't need to if you are compiling another version
e.g. 2.2.13 instead of 2.2.14...

I'm really glad I had a backup....
Kernel tarballs come with a readme from Linus,
in hindsight, it is a good idea to print it out, read it,
& follow the instructions *step by step* :o)
