[expert] cron and rmmod?

On looking at my logs I wondered
is it absolutely necessary to have
cron run rmmod -as every ten minutes?
I have a lot of strange hard drive
activity about two minutes after I boot
up.  It's like something is checking out
the file system or something.  But there
is no entry in any log that I can see as to
what this activity is.  Any clues?  No errors
or no problems so far (been running Mdk 7.0
for two days so far) just curious.
