Almost all of the kernel compile instructions I've read, including the
documentation with the last kernel I downloaded (one of the 2.3 series) all
mention make mrproper as one of the first steps. I don't think that's really a
bug, reading the instrucions on how to compile such an important piece of
software ought to be ingrained in a person's head.
