It's the "IP" in TCP/IP -- or Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
Protocol...

an abbreviation I often hear is "IP" in place of "IP address" - e.g.
"What's your IP" (sounds vaguely like "Breaker, breaker, what's your
handle")
