Multics was a joint project (fundede by ARPA) for a "computer
utility"; roughly speaking MIT produced the OS, Bell Labs the
compilers and GE the hardware.

But it was GE and subsequently Honeywell who actually sold it as a
commercial product, which was what I mean.

There were only 8 rings (except on the original GE-645 implementation,
in which rings were simulated by software). Rings 6 & 7 were in "outer
darkness" without even access to the system libraries.
