That's the reason why you're getting collisions - the network addy's have to be 
unique.

For instance: 

On my box I have dsl w/ a static ip assigned by the ISP.  That's eth0.

eth1 is a static IP assigned by me (192.168.0.1)  therefore the broadcast 
addy's are <ISP.IP.>.255 and 192.168.0.255.  Now I'm assuming that you have a 
similar setup as I do - some kind of high speed connection comming, and then 
going out from the linux box to other machines.
