I can confirm that in Mandrake 7.0 you can still use a password that
starts with a non-alphanumeric character, 'cause I have such an install
that does . . .

BTW, I wrote a program for generating random passwords.  Don't know if
anybody cares, but here it is anyway . . .

[bts@i7500 ~]# cat ranpw
#! /usr/bin/perl -w

$pw = "";
for (1 .. 8) {
    $value = rand(86) + 41;
    $new = chr($value);
    $pw = $pw . $new;
}

print "pw = \"$pw\"\n";

This generates plenty of "odd-looking" passwords (that being the idea,
of course), and so far the ones I've tried have worked fine.
