Thanks to all who responded.
I tried the further suggestions without success.
I noticed that I can append=32 and append 64 ok but if I go over that
limit it either freezes, freaks out, or boots with 64M.
I'm inclined to go with Pi's idea of unmatched DIMMs causing the
problem, as I have one 64M and two 32M's.
......Stop the presses....
That was indeed the problem. Ive got one 64 and 4 matched 32's. I wanted
128 in my Linux box and 64 in the kids windows box. Put the 3 32's in
linux and bios recognizes 96 and free reports 96.
It's a bit disappointing that I only have 3 DIMM slots
but I can live with it.
Thanks to all,
Gene
