I believe there is a serial PPP howto and a parallel port PPP howto;
either of those will get you started with a non-ethernet connection. I
don't know whether either will be fast enough to run an X connection at
reasonable speed.

You can get two ethernet cards and connect them directly. To do that, you
need a hub-to-hob or crossover cable; the standard "straight-through"
cable will not work. With Ethernet cards as inexpensive as they are,
that's what I would do.

I gather the non-Linux notebook runs some flavor of Windows. You can get X
servers for Windows; some are freeware. Otherwise you are limited to
character displays such as telnet.
