I'm a newbie on Linux firewalls too, I've had a pretty good experience with a product called "PMfirewall" it's a script that write rules to the IPCHAINS section. They have a pretty helpful email list, although it is very low volume, and there is an archive of the mail list so you don't have to ask the same questions over and over. Vern PS.
