bascule....I suppose you could start it up from a konsole
window (I think that's what you meant by an xterm window) but
I don't (it doesn't seem like a ver clean way to do it)do it
that way.  Myself, I do a ctl-alt f2 from my original desktop,
login at the console and then execute startx -- :1 and it
opens a new desktop on the virtual console located at ctl-alt
f8.  When I'm done I sign out of the desktop and exit from the
console session and finally do an alt-f7 back to my original
desktop.  Or I can leave it open and ctl-alt-f7 and ctl-alt-f8
back and forth between the two desktops.
