to read from your localhost you would edit your /etc/news/nnrp.access
file ( or whereever you've located your config files for the news
server.

The line your concerned with would be:

localhost:Read Post:::* (to allow from localhost)
192.168.1.1:Read Post:::* (to allow from this IP)
*.*:Read Post:::* (to allow from everywhere)

The above do not ask for passwords.

NO! It works just like it's supposed to. The default is to disallow
until allowed. Its up to you to enable it.

I agree information is geared toward seasoned USNET administrators. But
there are an abundance of whitepapers FAQ's and books on INN and USNET
servers in general. Start here:
http://web.inter.nl.net/users/Elena.Samsonova/unix/INN/v2.3/cookbook.htm
l

then go here:
http://www.blank.org/innfaq/

the here:
http://www.visi.com/~barr/INN.html

That should get ya started ;)

You'll have to have someone provide you a news feed to get this. Then
you'll have to config your /etc/news/newsfeeds file ( or wherever you've
located it during install. Setting this up is way beyond the scope of
this email. And feeds are expensive in my opinion.

I really think running INN is way overkill for 2 groups or so. You may
wanna check freshmeat for suck, leafnode and the like. However, if ya
just wanna learn or just plain want to do a few "private newsgroups" on
your own server then read on.

After you edit you nnrp.access file and edit your innn.conf file you'll
need to make some groups if you want a few private groups on your
machine. Using the ctlinnd command. From a root prompt issue ctlinnd -h
to view what commands there are. To make a new group type

ctlinnd newgroup testgroup.local

In this example we would have created the newsgroup testgroup.local for
our private local newsserver.

Anyway, that should get ya started. I hope I didn't leave anything out.
I did this off the top of my head. There is so much more to this for a
full time INN implementation. But for a localized version of INN this
should be enought to get ya going on "private newsgroups". No feeds or
anything just local newsgroups on the local server. Make sure in the
nnrp.access file you don't open your INN up to anyone outside of your
localhost or local network when ya do this. Also you won't be able to
cross post to newsgroups out on the internet from your local groups.
Enjoy.

Any full-service ISP can provide a feed to you. There are many companies
who do nothing more than sell news feeds. Like I stated before they can
be quite expensive. Hardware wise and bandwidthwise

And this is primarily why the default installation doesnt allow
anything. Most dont have a clue as to what the consequences are of
running a news server.

My advice is purchase these books
 "Managing Usenet" ISBN# 1565921984
 "DNS and Bind,3rd Ed." ISBN# 1565925122
 "Sendmail (Nutshell)" ISBN# 1565922220 <-The Bat Book

And read as much on the net as you can about INN and USENET as you can.
