I had the same problem when I tryed to change my ipaddres and hostname: type
startx and it goes black.
X does some stuff on the network so if things are not right it can't finish
starting.
Make sure your networking is all good then run Xconfigurator or drakx (could
be DRAKx or similar, I'm not sure of the
case) to get fresh settings then try startx again.
You can search the archives of this list for more info (about three weeks
ago).
