Dear friends:

I think I did something wrong, but I can't quite figure out what it was:

I tried to upgrade the new Quanta HTML Editor. I got an error message
telling me that the new version conflicts with the old one. So, I
decided to uninstall (rpm -e) the old one first. Everything seems fine
except that the uninstalling of the old version of Quanta kept hanging
for a long time without returning, as it is supposed to, to a prompt.
So, I Cnt + C . I then tried to install the new one (rpm -Uvh). This is
the message I got:

[root@adsl-77-233-178 sher]# rpm -e quanta
cannot get exclusive lock on database
error: cannot open //var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm
[root@adsl-77-233-178 sher]# rpm -Uvh quanta-1.0-1mdk.i686.rpm
cannot get exclusive lock on database
error: cannot open //var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm
[root@adsl-77-233-178 sher]# rpm -Uvh --force quanta-1.0-1mdk.i686.rpm
cannot get exclusive lock on database
error: cannot open //var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm
[root@adsl-77-233-178 sher]#

[sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$ whereis quanta
quanta: [sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$

The Quanta executable used to reside in /usr/bin/quanta. Now "quanta" is
gone.

So what could be holding up my proper uninstallation of the old version
and the installation of the new version?

Would really appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks so much, as always.

Benjamin
