One option is to setup Apache to use a dir in your user dir instead of httpd.
Another option that will come in handy if you think you might host other
(virtual) domains on your box is to setup a virtual domain for your site, doing
it now will save you having to do it later. 

I'm not sure where you are uploading from but I use samba to upload from my win
box. You can setup a disk share for your httpd dir if you are transferring on a
LAN.
