Lately my computer has been hanging solid every few hours. Not only is this annoying but it has resulted in lost data and file corruption. A couple of days ago I started fresh. I formatted everything ReiserFS and installed Mandrake 7.1 (with XFree 4.0). Its still doing it. Checking the syslong I see the error message "Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 004177c0. The address is different each time this happens. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when it happens. The computer has been sitting idle when it happens. Before I go nuts, can someone please explain to me what this error message means and what I can do to fix my problem? My fiancee runs Windows 98 on a computer right beside mine and hers has been left on for 2 weeks straight with no crashes. I can't make it for four hours. Any information or help would be appreciated. -Chris kernel: Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 004177c0 kernel: current->tss.cr3 = 01122000, %cr3 = 01122000 kernel: *pde = 00000000 kernel: Oops: 0000 ernel: CPU: 0 kernel: EIP: 0010:[do_generic_file_read+307/1432] kernel: EFLAGS: 00010206 kernel: eax: ccf7d928 ebx: cff7ec94 ecx: 00000000 edx: 004177b8 kernel: esi: 4014f000 edi: 00000000 ebp: c8f02740 esp: c1125ccc kernel: ds: 0018 es: 0018 ss: 0018 kernel: Process ld (pid: 14791, process nr: 46, stackpage=c1125000) kernel: Stack: 00000000 c1125f8c c1125d50 000825b3 00001000 00000000 0001f000 00000000 kernel: 00000001 00000000 00000001 00000000 00000000 ccf7d928 00000306 000825b3 kernel: 00001000 c0121433 c8f02740 c8f02754 c1125d34 c0121604 c8f02740 00001000 kernel: Call Trace: [generic_file_read+91/116] [file_read_actor+0/80] [neigh_hh_init+159/256] [wait_for_tcp_memory+65/208] [merge_segments+696/764] [neigh_hh_init+34/256] [lookup_dentry+773/912] kernel: [get_unmapped_area+65/120] [do_mmap+969/1100] [do_mmap+952/1100] [old_mmap+178/240] [sys_read+178/208] [error_code+45/64] [system_call+52/64] Jun 11 11:25:05 c28579-c kernel: Code: 39 42 08 75 f0 39 4a 0c 75 eb ff 42 14 b8 02 00 00 00 0f ab Jun 11 11:25:05 c28579-c kernel: Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 004177c0 Jun 11 kernel: current->tss.cr3 = 01ce0000, %cr3 = 01ce0000 Jun 11 kernel: *pde = 00000000 Jun 11 11:25:05 c28579-c kernel: Oops: 0000 Jun 11 11:25:05 c28579-c kernel: CPU: 0 Jun 11 11:25:05 c28579-c kernel: EIP: 0010:[do_generic_file_read+307/1432] Jun 11 11:25:05 c28579-c kernel: EFLAGS: 00010206 Jun 11 11:25:05 c28579-c kernel: eax: ccf7d928 ebx: cff7ec94 ecx: 00000000 edx: 004177b8 Jun 11 11:25:05 c28579-c kernel: esi: 40014000 edi: 00000000 ebp: c97b1d80 esp: c1c0dccc Jun 11 11:25:05 c28579-c kernel: ds: 0018 es: 0018 ss: 0018 Jun 11 11:25:05 c28579-c kernel: Process collect2 (pid: 14790, process nr: 44, stackpage=c1c0d000) Jun 11 11:25:05 c28579-c kernel: Stack: 00000000 c1c0df8c 00000000 cf40ef80 00000000 c012c1c9 00000306 000836ef Jun 11 11:25:05 c28579-c kernel: 00001000 c1c0ddb0 00000001 00000000 00000000 ccf7d928 00000000 00000306 Jun 11 11:25:05 c28579-c kernel: 00000000 c0121433 c97b1d80 c97b1d94 c1c0dd34 c0121604 c97b1d80 00001000 Jun 11 11:25:05 c28579-c kernel: Call Trace: [reiserfs_getblk+37/536] [generic_file_read+91/116] [file_read_actor+0/80] [neigh_hh_init+159/256] [wait_for_tcp_memory+65/208] [netstat_get_info+0/136] [merge_segments+696/764] Jun 11 11:25:05 c28579-c kernel: [get_unmapped_area+65/120] [do_mmap+969/1100] [do_mmap+952/1100] [old_mmap+178/240] [sys_read+178/208] [error_code+45/64] [system_call+52/64] Jun 11 11:25:05 c28579-c kernel: Code: 39 42 08 75 f0 39 4a 0c 75 eb ff 42 14 b8 02 00 00 00 0f ab
