Thanks for all discussion! It sounds an interesting issue.
As I know the function of fsck is different from that of Defrag. Fsck
check the the file system and fix the error. While Defrag optimize the HD
further. CPU, RAM, MB, speed of HD,PCI are important for the overall
performance of computer, optimal location still speeds up computer,
especially for large calculations. (as to me, file is larger than
6GB-spit into several files, CPU of PIII 500 is longer than a week). It
seems Defrag under windows works for HD optimization. I will try the
sugestion under Linux. While fsck coursed my lots of trouble, my computer
crashed once due to the overload of heavy jobs. During the recover, fsck
removed my work directory, everything was gone, which costed me several
months' work. In sense of this case, I think improvement for fsck is still
necessary.

As to the zie of file, I heard about this formula: 2**n, n is the bits
of your OS. SO in our case (32 bits), it's about 2.1GB. I used IRIX 64
bits system, I could creat 15GB single file.
