Not really. Cisco use only open standards, they don't embrace and extend,
and they have important competitors: Lucent, Nortel, Alcatel, Siemens,
3Com... and Linux ;-) You have the choice.

So... Cisco is not a monopoly, it's just *the reference* because their
TCP/IP stack is the most performant. Linux is not bad in regards to
TCP/IP, but is behind even Slowlaris and BSD.

I use Linux as my main router (routes fiber on 4 subnets), but I wouldn't
use it for a major backbone.. yet (maybe kernel 3.0?) ;-)
