to switch to X4.0 in Mandrake 7.1, install the X4.0 server: XFree86-server-4.0-6mdk.i586.rpm then create a link: /etc/X11/X->/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 to switch back link: /etc/X11/X->/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA or whatever surver you were using.
