You might want to look into man pppd. pppd now has an option to dial on
demand, making diald unnecessary.

For instance, my /etc/ppp/options contains:

10.0.0.0:10.0.0.0

demand

idle 240

ipcp-accept-remote

ipcp-accept-local

lock

noauth

connect "/usr/sbin/chat -f /etc/ppp/chat-script" 

/dev/ttyS2 115200 

modem 

crtscts 

defaultroute 

noipdefault 

I'm not sure its elegant, but it works for me. On boot, I activate the
connection with netcfg, and it works.
