I'm taking a risk answering ANY query on the expert list - so
wait a few hours for an expert to correct this.........
But my approach would be
Forget Linuxconf.
In a console as root (will not work otherwise) try
chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd
That should allow any user to connect, and it should stay put!
