Check you disk space.. 
do a "df -k" on the prompt... this usually happens when you run out of disk
space.. 

If you are unable to boot coz X crashes, say "linux 3" at LILO prompt.. if
u are using grub, press "e" to edit the command and add 3 in front of
vmlinuz.
