Hi,
Versions of the via82cxxx driver below 1.1.4, (1.0.0, 1.1.0, 1.1.1,
and 1.1.2, 1.1.3 was never publicly released), require that SB legacy
emulation be enabled in your motherboard's bios. Your motherboard bios
might not have this SB legacy emulation though. My Abit VT6X4 does not.
If your bios does not have a setting for SB legacy emulation, then you
have 2 choices:
1) via82cxxx drivers starting with 1.1.4 do not use the SB legacy
emulation, and can be used, but these drivers only work with a
2.3.x/2.4.x kernels, as noone has backported the driver to the 2.2.x
kernel.
2) ALSA supports th VIA 82C686 without using the SB legacy emulation, and
works with both 2.2.x kernels and 2.3.x/2.4.x kernels.
