The failure to mount filesystems means that your partition table is trashed. There are more fine-grained answers than that but that is what they boil down to. If you are trying a pure 7.1 install try it with DrakX, the 7.1 installer, which actually knows a lot about partitions, and don't make / or /usr bigger than abpout 8G unless you read and follow the advice at http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/heliumlast.php3 There are now several styles of ext2 partitions, and the PM you have may not support the newer features like sparse superblocks...
