My first intel pc was built by hand. Bought the bare mobo and had to install
and solder my own components in. Had 2 5-1/4 floppies and a 40M HD ($400).
Built my own monitor from an old Xray machine and had an external power
supply the size of a toaster (4 slicer). My dad even helped me burn a set of
modified BIOS chips (couldn't stand watching it check every bit of the 64k
memory so we just told it to check the first 10k (i think) of each chip and
assume the rest of the chip was ok.) I think I even still have some old
Teletype parts lying around in the basement.

Anyone recall the old Data General dishwashers?? Gawd those things were
monsters.
