_Never_ do this.  When using rpm to install a new kernel, do not use upgrade,
use install.  Choosing upgrade erases your old kernel and its associated
modules so that if you have problems (like you did) you cannot easily recover.

If you have SCSI drives or use a ReiserFS you must have an initrd or the
filesystem cannot be mounted.

It isn't supposed to be, becuase RPM doesn't know if you need one or not.

Using your boot disk (You _did_ make a boot floppy, didn't you?), you should
be able to get into the systems and mkinitrd (please read the manpage).
