I believe the official answer is that this machine is functioning
correctly and the other one is misconfigured. You should not log in as root.
You should log in as a normal user and only su to root for specific
administrative tasks. You significantly increase your vulnerability to
security breaches if you log in to an X session as root. If you just want a
console session for heavy system maintenance, try typing 'linux single' at
the LILO prompt.
