You probably ended up renumbering your partitions (some partitioning
software does this automagically). You need to use a utility (say fdisk
from a tomsrtbt disk) that can see the partition, discover which one is your
/ partition now. You'll probably have to guess based on the partition size.
Pass that as an argument (including device name) as a kernel option.
Example:
LILO
boot: linux root=/dev/hda6
