I'm using Mandrake 7.0, installed in April, 2000
I have NOT recently cleaned out /tmp. There is nothing in there that seems
related to X. What is supposed to be in there?
First, I tried to start xfs, (in /usr/X11R6/bin) it started and appeared in
ps. I did startx again, and the same failure as before.
I looked around at what run levels really mean, (I'm currently starting in 3,
as 5 crashes) I discovered the /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs script, which is run
automatically in run level 3 (and others). I played around with this script a
bit and here is what I found:
-------------------
98 /etc/rc.d/init.d root# ./xfs status
xfs is stopped
99 /etc/rc.d/init.d root# ./xfs start
Starting X Font Server: [ OK ]
100 /etc/rc.d/init.d root# ./xfs status
xfs dead but subsys locked
101 /etc/rc.d/init.d root# ./xfs stop
Shutting down X Font Server: [FAILED]
102 /etc/rc.d/init.d root# ./xfs status
xfs is stopped
103 /etc/rc.d/init.d root# ./xfs restart
Restarting X Font Server. _FontTransSocketINETCreateListener: Unable to get
service for -1
_FontTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to create listener for tcp
_FontTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: mkdir(/tmp/.font-unix) failed, errno = 28
_FontTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to create listener for local
[FAILED]
104 /etc/rc.d/init.d root# ./xfs status
xfs dead but subsys locked
