Try recompiling your kernel from a fresh source. Make sure that Advanced
Power Management support is *enabled* but don't select "shutdown with
real mode BIOS".

I had this problem with the most recent kernel, and it was because of
the choice of real mode BIOS shutdown. Changing the setting and
recompiling resolved it.
