Yes, and used your chmod for good measure; no luck.

| If that doesn't work (and assuming that you only use KDE), you can
replace
| the script with a new one that reads:
|
| #!/bin/sh
| exec $(which kdm) $*
|
| Remeber to set it executable as above.
I really want to run KDE and Blackbox so I want to fix it to do this.

|
| This actually has nothing to do with X config. There is a specific
sequence
| of scripts that get run when you boot the machine and it is one of
those
| that is broken is some way. You aren't getting far enough for it to
be an X
| problem :p
Point taken - sloppy expression. My problem started from an upgrade of
a serviceable LM7 running XF86 4.0 to LM7.1 with a known broken XF86 4.0
and trying to install XF 4.0.1 to compensate. Somewhere I think the
links got broken or one of the scripts got corrupted. Unless I can get
help in figuring out which one or I find the answer in the books it may
be less trouble to reinstall 7.1 from scratch and then qmail etc.
Thanks, Anton.
