Ahh .. the joys of posting without proofreading....

The proper command line *should* read:
        (cd src/ && tar cf - . ) | (cd dest/ && tar xvf -)

replacing the $$ in the first post with && ... this will actually work
instead of throwing odd errors at the command line :)
