Hope this is not too 'configuration' for the expert group...

Basic problem is that I have a dual processor PC, SMP kernel but only
one CPU is detected.

I have followed the MUO guide to update my kernel via RPM (symbolic
links, initrd, lilo config) to 2.2.16-9mdksmp.
This was pretty unstable, refusing to respond to all input devices after
about 30 seconds in KDE.

I returned to my original kernel set up 2.2.15-4mdksmp but still no
second CPU detection. Reading the SMP HOWTO I spotted the gotcha about
APM and disabled hardware APM and apm daemon startup.

No joy.

Now, have I missed other gotcha's or is it my CPUs?

I have a PIII 700E Slot 1 in the first mobo slot and a socket PIII 700E
in the second slot using a slocket adapter card. CPUs are matched
stepping according to Intel Sspec document. BIOS is perfectly happy
with the dual processors, reporting both sets of temperatures, voltages
and fan speeds. Using cat /proc/cpuinfo in Linux the details of the
first CPU (only) are stated correctly.

HW details: Super P6DBS; 128M RAM, 91. GB SCSI HD, Iwill Slocket II
adapter card for the socketted PIII.

I could try another Slot 1 in the second slot of my mobo but this would
be an expensive experiment for me - once the cellophane on those boxed
CPUs is open, 'refund' is not an option! On the other hand, Slot 1
700Es are getting in short supply. Decisions decisions.

Thanks for your indulgence

ps I have tried to track down a couple of SMP lists but each got 'access
denied' or 'server not responding'
