Funny you should say this, for I have had exactly the opposite experience:

I have built and configured dozens of systems and I have never seen a WD
drive fail *once*. I have a Caviar 2200 that has been in heavy-use service
for 8 years, and it shows no signs of slowing down. Consequently, I spec
WD drives whenever possible (so by rights I should be seeing some failures
now, since the vast majority of the drives I use are WD -- but that's not
the case -- still the same reliability).

The only time I have had to replace a WD was after the "bad controller"
recall last year.

If there is a brand I have had trouble with it is Quantum. My wholesaler
stopped carrying them because they were having so many bad drives come
back.
