Thanks for your help. I got rid of 2.2.17 and compiled 2.2.16 with success.
It had the soundcard driver (RealTek) I needed.

2.2.17 isn't an official kernel patch (i.e., it's a Mandrake patch -- I
should add also that it is a bit buggy... I had problems with panics and
crashes until I compiled 2.2.16 from kernel.org).

Xconfig will have things greyed out if you disable "experimental" code.
This is set very early in the config process (first three or so feature
groups).

If supermount won't work it's likely that you missed something in your
configuration -- is automount part of the kernel, or did you compile it as
a module? Is it dependent on any other modules or kernel features? Take a
close look... and read the help information for the automount feature.

It's easy to miss things when you are configuring a kernel for
compilation. I've inadvertently introduced many problems when I wasn't
careful about my configuration. What always works for me is a slow and
steady approach, taking care to look through each feature group and making
sure I know exactly why I am setting something a certain way.

Good luck,

Stephen
