In /etc/X11/XF86Config make sure the Pointer/Input Device Section looks
similar to the following:

XFree86 3.3.x:

    Section "Pointer"
        Protocol    "IMPS/2"
        Device      "/dev/mouse"
        ZAxisMapping 4 5

XFree86 4.0.x:

    Section "InputDevice"
            Identifier  "Keyboard0"
            Driver      "keyboard"
            Option  "XkbLayout"     "us"
    EndSection
