so, I downloaded and installed it the other day. The install process was free and easy just like the 7.1 install. I always do expert and choose the packages I want installed. Some of the packages I indicated should not be installed were and the ones that weren't actually installed were still in the KDE and windowmaker menu's. Weird huh? The installation correctly identified my voodoo5 and installed the correct drivers for it. But it also installed drivers for the voodoo3 and at the last moment of the install it decided that I needed to use the framebuffer kernel. All I had to do to use the voodoo5 as my primary display adaptor was edit the XF86Config file and reboot with a normal kernel. KDE 1.9.3 boots and runs slower then Gnome. What a disappointment because it is beautiful. Konquorer is great. I really like the new icons. Although the icons that get put in the task bar as shortcuts are very small and when I changed them to bigger versions the shortcuts no longer worked. Doh! Also, where did all the icons go? Perhaps a third of what is available in 7.1 is available in 7.2. The latest Opera beta works fine with KDE as does staroffice 5.2. A number of the tools in the KDE configuration area cause segfaults. Notably the screen saver and theme options. Netscape 4.75 is its usual self though..... Also, Drakboot causes a segfault when I try to use it from the command line and from the DrakConf panel. My optical USB mouse was correctly identified and installed. My usb printer was identified but the installer couldn't find appropriate drivers for it. It's an Epson photo stylus 750. My only real issue so far is that while I can use my voodoo5 for general display purposes and can run the GLtests like Gears and reflector(ion?) but quake3 will not run. It says there is a problem with module tdfx in kernel 2.2.17 (I can't remember the exact kernel number right now. Its the newest stable kernel)? I uninstalled the Glide_V3 rpm in the hopes that would work but no go. I tried uninstalling all 3dfx and Glide related rpms and re-installing the ones from the linux.3dfx.com web site. The dri rpm can't be compiled and the tdfx rpm complains of dependency problems with Xfree86-server rpm, Xfree86-devel rpm and mesa 3.3. Does this mean that 7.2 uses a different version of mesa then what quake3 wants? Am I going to have to go back to 7.1 if I want to play quake3? Other then the issues I've shared here, I am impressed with 7.2. It continues the overall polishing of mandrake that I've seen through the 5.2-7.2 series. Keep up the good work everybody at Mandrake. I can't wait for a final version of this puppy! Abe Oh, one other thing. I asked for the 2.4.0 kernel because I wanted to take a look at the great white hope before it gets all finalized and such but the installer didn't install it. Jesus saves, Allah forgives, Chthulu thinks you'd make a nice sandwich.
