Hi,

I seem to have gotten problems with MandrakeUpdate on several
boxes running Mandrake 7.0. Nothing happens, i.e. no packages are
downloaded nor updated, when I click on the Go! button after selecting
the packages (usually all) that I want to update. Now I can
only update packages by using 'rpm -Uvh'.

MandrakeUpdate used to work some weeks ago but something happened
either after I had run MandrakeUpdate or used 'rpm -Uvh' (can't
remember exactly when it stopped working). The start of the failure
maybe connected with an update of MandrakeUpdate itself to version
7.0-13mdk, which I did in August, but this is just a guess.

After checking in /var for possible error messages printed when I run
MandrakeUpdate I found that many warnings and one error message are
listed in the file /var/log/xdm-error.log. Here is a list of the
warnings that appear when MandrakeUpdate is started (before clicking
on Go!) (I only show a few of these lines here; there are many
identical written out) (note: other log messages are also written to
xdm-error.log at this stage, telling that the connection to the
Mandrake update ftp cite is ok):

Use of uninitialized value at /usr/X11R6/bin/MandrakeUpdate.pm
             line 108, <F> chunk 777.
Use of uninitialized value at /usr/X11R6/bin/MandrakeUpdate.pm
            line 124, <F> chunk 777.
Use of uninitialized value at /usr/X11R6/bin/MandrakeUpdate.p
            line 42, <F> chunk 103.
Use of uninitialized value at /usr/X11R6/bin/MandrakeUpdate.pm
            line 44, <F> chunk 103.

These warnings might not be too severe. However, the following error
is listed in /var/log/xdm-error.log when I click on Go! after having
selected the packages to update:

        failed to open /var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm

        Warning: line too long

After this nothing happens. I can again select the packages to update
then click on Go! but the same thing happens, i.e. no packages are
downloaded nor updated.

It seems the packages.rpm file has become corrupt. What should I do?

Johan
