Sorry, my grammar was blurry. I know that only syslogd writes to /var/log/messages. Instead of "Stuff is written in /var/log/messages from so many sources", I should have said, "So many different processes tell syslogd to write messages". What is this "Server/Workstation Expert" magazine? Do they have a URL?
